I found this recipe.... To a mixture of 11.4 g (50 mmol) of 2-bromo-4'-methylpropiophenone in 25 ml of toluene [1] at a temperature of 20 deg C, 3.1 g of methylamine in 17.5 ml of water is added within 5 minutes. The contents of the flask are stirred at 20-25°C for 16 hours (or at 0°C for 24 hours, but the best results are achieved by a 2-hour reaction at 50-70°C). After this time, the mixture is blown through a stream of air for half an hour and poured into 150 ml of cold water. The phases are separated and the aqueous phase is extracted with 2x20 ml toluene. The combined toluene phases are extracted with 3x25 ml water and 2x15 ml rm HCl. The combined acid phases are washed 2x25 ml with toluene and the water is evaporated in vacuo to dryness. The remaining white precipitate is purified by crystallization from 20 ml of acetone. Yield: 4.8g (45%) mephedrone*HCl. and I have a question, many chemists say that to use methylamine 40% you need to use naoh to obtain methylamine gas, from what I see you don't need it and here an amination reaction takes place in toluene. We know that toluene needs to be cooked at 60°C for 2 hours to obtain the best efficiency and quality of this reaction. so my question is methylamine hcl and water thrown into toulene with bromoketone produces methylamine gas??
