Are there any cheaper or more easily available chemicals to use without sacrificing quality/yield of the final product?

And also can i change the benzene to toluene?

By replacing methylamine you would get an analog . Making methylamine is fairly easy from formaldehyde and ammonium chloride. Yes you can substitute benzene with toluene as it is used just as a solvent for the reaction.

For small batches you can use hexamine (HMTA), look for sciencemadness or rhodium threads about methylamine from this.
