Hello,
This method has low efficiency
It is almost the same method as the alpha-phenylacetonitrile method, except that instead of benzyl cyanide, toluene is added, and instead of sodium ethoxide, potassium ethoxide is added
First, crush the potassium and pour into the flask
12.8 grams of potassium
Then pour in absolute ethanol (it must be absolute because otherwise KOH potassium hydroxide will be formed, which greatly reduces the efficiency) about 75 to 80 ml
Continue heating until the potassium grains melt
The solution will either turn yellow or milky (if you wipe the mineral oils on the potassium, the solution will turn milky)
Then combine about 50 grams of toluene and about 57.5 grams of ethyl acetate and slowly add the potassium ethoxide solution with vigorous stirring with a magnetic disc
It should take 15 minutes for the solution to be added
Then turn the heat to 65 degrees (until 75 is not a problem) and let it cool for two hours with a reflux condenser and heat it from below
Then a jelly state will form (let it sit for a day or at least a few hours to thicken)
Now pour 98% concentrated sulfuric acid until white grains form.
Toxic white fumes will form, be sure to wear a mask
It is better to use 37% HCl, the efficiency will be better.
After adding to 100 degrees with a reflux condenser, heat for 3 hours
A black oily layer will form, remove it and you can use it.
It is the same as BMK
