Mercury(II) nitrate is used in some syntheses, such as aluminum amalgam amphetamine synthesis, to reduce phenylnitropropenes and phenylnitrostyrenes. Mercury salts are controlled substances to purchase in some countries. If there is a problem to buy Mercury(II) nitrate, you can synthesize it by yourself. It takes a mercury thermometer and concentrated nitric acid (67-70%) only. The mercury(II) nitrate synthesis is shown in following video from these components. Then, it is used for aluminum amalgam production, which is used for 1-phenyl-2-nitropropene reduce to amphetamine.

06-0:40 - Mercury is extracted from a mercury thermometer;
45-1:45 - Concentrated nitric acid (HNO3 67-70%) is added;
45-2:00 - Mercury is reacted with nitric acid and formed mercury(II) nitrate Hg(NO3)2. Nitrogen(IV) oxide (NO2) is released during reaction as brown gas and water.
15-4:00 - A cut Al foil 12 g is amalgamated by prepared mercury(II) nitrate solution.
10-5:55 - A solution 1-Phenyl-2-nitropropene 10 g in IPA with acetic acid is reduced by Al amalgam to amphetamine.
