I understand the general idea, but for some reason can't figure out if methylamine gas is produced, or methylamine hydrochloride in solution is produced.

So say one uses a mercury amalgam to reduce the nitromethane. I don't believe this route needs hcl to produce methylamine, correct?

If not, I understand how to gas into a solution, and no help is needed

If this method does need hcl, how does one separate the methylamine from the mixture?

Are you talking about reduction of nitromenthane with Fe/HCl system or Al/Hg system?
Anyway it is a gas.

Oh sorry didn't read your post carefully. Al/Hg system produces a gas, reaction is strongly exotermic, HCl is not needed. In my opinion it is worse than formaldehyde route. Your methylamine gas however will be dissolved in the reaction mixture.

How do we get the methylamine out of the solution?
