If I want to encrypt a file and send it to a partner, how would I do this? According to here I can just ask GPG to encrypt the file, but does that mean I also need to given them my passphrase?
To me, this doesn't seem secure, or is there some other way to do it?

You need their public key and then you encrypt the file using THEIR key this will allow only them to decrypt it using their passcode.

PGP is based on a 2 key system. Your private key and your public key.

The private key will be used in your software/on your side to proof ownership of the public key.
The public key can be used to encrypt files for you, that can only be encrypted with your private key.
You can use your public key to encrypt files/messages using the public key of your partner or partners.

I hope that could help
