So this is being discussed mildly on the vespiary.

Apparently there is discussion on whether it can be reduced, similarly to nitromethane, into methylamine. Apparently it is part of the nitromethane reaction itself.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought about this. It would be great for clandestine chemists, perhaps those who aren't exactly large scale, maybe at scale and be a good potential source of methylamine that is legal and less watched than nitromethane or methylamine.

How about n-methylhydroxylamine to nitromethane instead via potassium ferrate (IV) solution?

(Also methylamine synthesis is trivial and completely OTC from walk-in retail shops anyway)

That's interesting, but at the same time, seems to be going one step forward, two back, for methylamine at least.

Say that works, now you have to reduce the NM to methylamine. Two reactions, versus *if* the methylhydroxylamine can be reduced via similar methods as reducing NM, that is one reaction.

Regardless, that is a good idea, because maybe someone also needs to make a nitrostyrene. Actual, a pretty great idea for clandestine chemists. I'll see what I can dig up on such a reaction to get NM

I'd check the vespiary for developments on a similar thread, bit it seems down.
