Hi everyone! I just want to say how awesome I find this place. I'm not cool enough to be a chemist (unless cooking counts as that's how I make my bread) but I have lurked in drug chemistry forums and on reddits hoping to soak up a little of the ability some of you have to perform magic you call science . I don't have the patience to sit down and learn the stuff I need in order to synthesize anything remotely beyond beginners level but still I lurk, read, attempt to understand and marvel. I'm really happy this site exists and to have found it because just with the amount of ppl like me I have known there had to be more places like this one online.
My question: I gathered a paper grocery bag full of poppy pods, straw and the seeds within the pods last spring. They were not allowed to dry before I harvested but instead I dried them out afterwards and I'm planning on making tea since everything that I've read about flake opium sounds disappointing. I did come across some stuff on myctopia the mushroom enthusiast community about a possible method of making refined brown powder thought to be morphine sulphate and if anyone's interested I'll go find & post their report. Anyways, when I harvested my pods many had seeds and so my sack of pods & straw also is full of seeds. I'll be saving some to plant again but it made me curious if the pods/straw are better for obtaining alkaloids or the seeds. I am almost certain that I read that the only reason poppy seed tea is pharmacologically active is that plant matter from the pods covers the outside of the seeds and is the thing actually doing the magic - seeds themselves are inactive. I would like to put anything useful to good so I'll likely use everything but are the pods and straw basically the whole enchilada? Thanks!
