There are two pool chemicals bcdmh, and dbdmh, or bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin and 1,3-Dibromo-5,5-dimethylimidazolidine-2,4-dione, respectively, which I am wondering if can be used to halogenate certain chemicals.

I understand the bcdmh will likely chlorinate and brominate, but for some reactions I don't think it will matter too much.

For example, I would like to create 2 methyl chloro/bromopropionate, by halogenating Lactic acid, then esterifying the product.

Can either one effectively halogenate as well as n-halo succinimide?

Could be an otc source of halogens for things like 4 methyl propiophenone, 2,5 dimethoxy nitrostyrene, perhaps a haloacetone?

You cant use these, if im remembering corectly sodium bromide and oxone is what you are intrested for halogenation from pool store.

I cannot find sodium bromide for the life of me in an in-person store, but I can order it.

Oxone yes, but it is the oxone with additives like sodium bicarbonate. Don't think it affects the reactions I would perform, and there are ways to isolate the peracid.

DBDMH is more like NBS, providing higher bromination selectivity, especially for α-halogenated compounds. If the main purpose is bromination, DBDMH will be safer and more controllable. If mixed chlorination/bromination results are acceptable and there is a need for efficient halogenation, BCDMH can be considered.

Thank you for the info

Probably going to stick to the dbdmh, as it'd be less messy, but likely experiment with the bcdmh as long as it is in pure form, and not tablets with lots of other inactive ingredients.

It'd be great if I could use the in-store bcdmh to produce 2 chloro/bromopropionate salts, as that really opens up the darzens as OTC and discreetly as possible.
