I saw this as a step in the MAPS synthesis of mdma, and I was wondering why this isn't available on the market, or so it seems.

Granted, the step to oxidize it to pmk was a dcm/tempo/kbr/bleach biphasic reaction, but surely we can come up with something doable for most chemists, at various scales?

Just seems they spelled out the next best precursor, and I have heard nothing about it.

I believe it is 13 in their article, yes. I assume one could replace the biphasic tempo/kbr/bleach system with another oxidant, hopefully a peroxide or oxone.

I don't think it is acetoxy safrole, the cas of the propanol compound is 10-401411, afaik

I thought the same thing and still do. China that I bought the 5-bromo from wanted a ridiculously high price for this. I believe it is CAS# 521097-97-2. Best I can tell, its not illegal in the US
