A Method for Preparing 30% Methylamine in Water from Methylamine Hydrochloride

This method is dedicated to my great mentor, William D.

Step 1:
Prepare methylamine hydrochloride using the methods explained on the website.
[CH₃NH₂]·HCl appears as a crystalline solid with needle-like shapes, resembling snow, and has a pungent odor similar to rotten fish and ammonia.

Step 2:
Combine 100 grams of methylamine hydrochloride with 75 grams of sodium hydroxide solution and 150 mL of methanol. The flask or container must be tightly sealed to prevent the loss of gas.
The temperature must be kept below zero degrees Celsius!

Step 3:
Add triethylamine drop by drop, up to 150 grams.

Step 4:
Stir thoroughly with a magnetic stirrer until the methylamine hydrochloride fully dissolves and NaCl (sodium chloride) is formed.

Step 5:
Follow the steps shown in the video to proceed toward the synthesis of methamphetamine.

An amine can be formed through the nucleophilic addition of ammonia or an amine to a ketone or aldehyde, leading to the formation of a hemiaminal (-C(OH)(NHR)-). This hemiaminal then undergoes dehydration to form an imine.

Methylamine is needed for that to form methylamine group (-NH-CH3). Triethylamine will works as a competitor for this reaction and form (-N+-(CH2CH3)3). Isn't it?

Triethylamine can act as a proton scavenger, playing an important role in imine formation and reduction reactions.

At this stage, TEA may be used to neutralize free protons or to stabilize intermediate compounds in the subsequent reactions.
