I have a question from a different point of view. Suppose you have a completely airtight room, where fresh air is forced in on one side and a high-powered fan pulls it out of the centre of the room on the other.

How do you deal with the filtration of the odour in the air? Do you use any purifiers, if so, what kind and with what kind of cartridge, or is it enough to give a high-capacity carbon filter with activated carbon on the exhaust as is used in cannabis cultivation. If such a filter would do the job, which activated carbon is best, CTC or ordinary carbon?

How is the air and odours filtered in the laboratories? Regards

Thank you very much for the link. I was just planning to use the carbon filter, this water filter interests me, I don't quite understand how it would work. Let's say I have a room like a cannabis grow room with a charcoal filter and an extractor, the pipe that pushes the air out goes into the tub and the end of the pipe lands under the water so that the air that the fan pulls out of the tent through the charcoal filter doesn't go into the room but flies through the water so that the impurities dissolve further in the water. Do I understand this correctly?

Is this water filter necessarily required?

Suppose I use such a carbon filter, with top grade CTC carbon (beats standard carbon, here I have experience with larger scale mj cultivation) along with a water scrubber at the end, will running synthesis with 1kg of bk4 at a time, high capacity ventilation envelope my odour effectively enough to do this in a detached house so that the smell does not reach the neighbours?

Best regards

Yes. It works as hookah bubbling. Water will absorb substances from air. After water filter, you have to install carbon filter.

I think in big scale synthesis you don't have enough only a carbon filter. It will be oversaturated quite fast.

According to the picture I found in the link you provided it should be carbon filter -> fan -> water, and you write fan -> water -> carbon filter. I understand that first the water to catch what it can, and then the whole thing to the carbon filter to clean to zero. Do I understand what you mean?

Using the principle you are talking about i.e. fan -> water -> charcoal filter with more bk4 such a charcoal filter do you think it will last for 2-3 throws before it gets saturated?

Such a freshly bought one should outwardly eliminate the smell to zero yes?

I think this sequence prolongs the life time of the carbon filter.
I can't say exactly, depends on your synthesis.

All in all, even if he were to change the activated carbon in the filter every cooking so as to eliminate the odour to 0 it would make sense.

Thank you for your help

Check out this filter system (attachement 1)

Ideally you could add ozon generators for a complete odor removal before the carbon filter, like they do it in cannabis farms.

In the right corner on the back of the room (attachement 1) you can see a water bath, which is used to further filter odors and toxic substances from the fumes, through the carbon filter and ozon generator you can then further purify and extract toxic substances from fumes. Also, the difference in tubes used is also noticed, as there are isolated tubes used for the system below the sealing, tubes coming directly from the reactors are regular tubes.

Also this picture 2 of my attachement might help to understand the circulation system better.

This is not my lab but it works well for synthesises that produce a lot of odors, the water can be mixed with soap or other odor neutralizing chemicals

I have an idea/ question. In my previous work I needed to tightly control the environmental parameters. Especially the humidity it needed to fluctuate between about 85+%Rh and 99% the. I accomplished this by: have a drum/ barrel with a lid. A duct and fan blow air into a bung in the lid. Another bung/ duct on the lid carried the humified air to the chamber. Inside the barrel was a 5 head ultrasonic pond fogger ( a fog machine basically) the fan and the fogger where operated by a humidistat/ relay. It could really pump out the fog. I'm thinking that this would work great in this application to and the fog would absorb the odor but the ducts going in and out would be tall enough that the fog couldn't escape the barrel. A hose bib at the bottom of the barrel would let the contaminated water out and you replace it periodically ( in my application I had a toilet tank float and needle valve that kept the barrel full of water, but I was exhausting the fog so it used a lot) this setup would have a fraction of the resistance of a submerged inlet.

I think they are not isolated, they are just plastic straight pipes becasue its not moving element of vent system, spiroflex is used near reactors becasue they could be moved lets say even 50cm in left or right./

Considering a small-scale home lab (1 l reactor, using chemicals such as DCM, 2b4mp, methylamine, HCl, acetone) vented outside without any filters, what is the distance where neighbors and passers by can smell the generated fumes?

it wont be noticeable. Mostvapour is when you pour methylamine. Another one whenfiltrating but if you have long channel vent( i got about 8m) it doesnt smell outside, but filtration is recommended
myidea is to use pressure ventilator that puts intoi liquid, above that carbon filter
