Halogenating Ethyl Lactate?

I am interested if anyone can speculate if BCDMH (32718-18-6 CAS) can be used to halogenate the hydroxyl group of ethyl lactate.

This would yield a Ethyl 2 halopropionate, which is a very useful precursor. Esterification of lactic acid should be simple, it's simply halogenating it that is the issue.

BCDMH is a common pool chemical, so the benefits here could be great.

by all respect BCDMH is probably the worst option for any halogenation since it contains chlorine and bromine making everything a gigantic mess of contamination. my guess would be phosphorus halides would prolly be best

In my mind, it doesn't matter if it is chlorinate or brominated, since both will do, but I also have the dibromo version available, so it can be done bromination only.

Phosphorous halide are unfortunately outside my reach currently
