Hello,

Can anyone tell me if (S)-3-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone CAS: 7331-52-4 is a good precursor Of GHB CAS: 96-48-0? And can you give me the synthesis please? 🙏🙏
Thanks in advance.
Greetings,

Yes it should be possible by hydrolysis i couldn’t find anything online but the theoretical procedure should be something like this:
-dissolve (S)-3-Hydroxy-gamma-butyrolactone (CAS: 7331-52-4) in water
-Add a strong base (NaOH,KOH)
-set for reflux and heat the mixture untill the ph neutralises
-let the mixture cool down then extract with solvent
-leave it to crystallise (repeat this step to purify the final product )

I think your a little bit off as 96-48-0 is not GHB it is actually GBL. I Don’t think 7331-52-4 is a precursor of GBL or GHB. It’s a different version of GBL is what I’m told. If it’s possible please advise as that is way easier to get.
