"The solution was cooled and extracted with xylene. The solution was filtered and the filtrate washed with xylene and the xylene portions added together. About 100 mls of conc HCL was added to the xylene shaken and separated. The aqueous solution was extracted with xylene and the xylene separated. The amine was then liberated from the aqueous portion with NaOH and worked up in the usual way to give MDA"

Yes it works. I'm having trouble with separating the salt from the mda in the end? I don't understand the same thing as work up as usual? Can someone explain? I tested what I do have, black and smokes instantly.

@johanson @HIT MONKEY

i wasnt sure what "working up in the usual way" meant. i asked chatgpt, so take this with a grain of salt, but this is what i got:

In chemistry, "worked up in the usual way" is a phrase often used in synthesis protocols or laboratory procedures to indicate that the reaction or process should be concluded or terminated according to standard or common practices. It implies that the subsequent steps to isolate, purify, or analyze the reaction products should follow established techniques or methods typically employed for similar reactions or compounds.

The specific steps involved in "working up" a reaction can vary depending on factors such as the nature of the reaction, the desired product, and the properties of the starting materials and reaction intermediates. However, common techniques used in the workup process may include:

1. Quenching or neutralizing any remaining reagents or reaction by-products.
2. Extracting the desired product or reaction mixture with a suitable solvent.
3. Washing or purifying the extracted material to remove impurities or unwanted compounds.
4. Drying or concentrating the purified product or reaction mixture.
5. Characterizing the final product or reaction mixture using analytical techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, or microscopy.

Overall, "worked up in the usual way" serves as a shorthand or general instruction to indicate that the subsequent steps in the synthesis or reaction process should be carried out using standard laboratory practices or established protocols.

maybe go back and reread the synthesis? send the whole thing if possible, it would make things a lot easier ^^;

we could imagine that thats what it means - i was refering more specifically to - in this case. - What would that be, because "worked up in the usual way" - when all that it was was a - hey - this is the way! - and then, whats the way? - it´s to work up the usual way, wtf
