So I know this is just an easy to order chemical, but I thought it would be fun to have something simple and basic some could do, and it could be useful for making sodium hydroxide at home.
I'm not going to give a guide, as I'm no chemist, but generally one can also find videos online easily for this very same thing.
But all you need is calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. Calcium hydroxide can be found in stores where pickling supplies are found, and sodium carbonate can be made from baking soda that has been heated for a while.
Simply react these in water (careful, heat!) And the hydroxide will slide from the calcium over to the sodium, and the carbonate will transfer to the calcium.
Calcium carbonate is very insoluble in water (something like 15mg per liter at 25c) so it can be filtered off and you have a sodium hydroxide solution, which could be evaporated down or completely dehydrated depending on needs.
Anyway, sorry if this is dumb, just thought it might help someone.
