Solution A: Add 2.5 ml of acetaldehyde and 2.0 g of vanillin to 100 ml of 95% ethanol.
Solution B: Concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Solution C: Chloroform.

Material extraction: A 1 g sample of marijuana was extracted using 15 ml of hexanes (or petroleum ether) and dried to 8 ml for use in the study.

Procedure: Add three drops of solution A to the marijuana extract and shake for 1 min. Then add three drops of solution B. Agitate gently, and determine the color produced. Add nine drops of solution C and note whether the color is extracted from the mixture to A and B. The purple color transfers to the organic layer, indicating that cannabinoids may be present.
