you are correct, all your doubts are as you state, the precursor must be a very dark brown crystalline powder, in reference to methylamine any of the 2 forms will do its job perfectly, simply if you use methylamine HCL it should be go dissolved in water with caustic soda, the hcl to sign the salt at 35-36% is perfect... blessings to the anthrax... c.d.s!!

There is no exact amount of HCl & pure acetone solution that you should add to the organic base, you must add the solution little by little to the organic base with the help of a pipette until the pH reaches 5 and you will see that it begins to come out Methylone HCl.
magnesium sulfate is not mandatory (optional only).

If your methylamine is in water 40% it will always separate since the dcm is immiscible with water, then we are only left with options such as: either your methylamine is not prepared in water and is in methanol or your dcm is mislabeled and not It is dcm, and may be another water-miscible product.
