You need to separate the isomers. The D and L isomers form large rocks on their own, but not together.

After pumping hydrogen chloride gas, this is the result. I am fine with this color

The excess acid evaporates as the ethanol evaporates. I can wash it to remove some impurities

evaporate it for crystallization. wash using Et2O or ethylacetate or petroleum ether (may be with small portion of acetone) on the vacuum filter.
recrystallize (optional) from alcohol or in other pure solvents

It doesn't matter how much it is. The important thing is that the content of the reaction substance in it is the same. For example, you need 100ml 40% methamethanol solution, and you only have 10% methylamethanol solution. You can add 400ml 10% methylamethanol solution to complete the reaction.

Why is isopropyl added to methylamine+meoh? I have not seen the use of this solvent in other similar write ups

Because it's needed to redissolve methylamine in IPA. It's a better option in compare with my write up cuz it allows to get rid of water and increase yield.

Assuming you inadvertently add too much NaBH4 at once and the temperature rises to 30C, is there any way to save it or do you have to restart in any case?
Yes I know I'm a complete idiot... I added another 300ml of IPA to dilute everything again and now it looks like at least something is happening again.

You need to avoid such temperature fluctuations cuz it reduces yield significantly. You can continue this batch. It's worth to get something instead of nothing.
