Well I tend to disagree - yeah sometimes it is experience, knowledge, studies or some other actual reason behind established procedures but sometimes it is something like traditions or just the fact that a lot of people do not like to think too much and question everything. The "Standard" procedure for Amphetamine production in Europe is a good example for the 2nd case. Pretty much everyone uses methanol as a solvent 3:1 to the base and Concentrated Sulfuric acid and usually 2-4 parts caffeine to make the "Paste". Methanol is not THAT easily obtained for most while there are plenty of other solvents that could be used Just as Well, can be bought OTC a Lot cheaper and are a Lot less toxic too... the sulphate Salt is certainly a good choice but there are other alternatives that are at least comparable in terms of producing a nice powdery and stable product yet everyone uses Sulfuric acid even though for most it is hard to get and some ppl pay Like 300 Euro for a Liter... But then again most customers are the same and would probably freak out if the smell/texture/whatever differs from what they are used to so....
I mean most still actually believe that drying the paste will make it loose potency especially If dried for too Long..

Sulfuric acid is restricted in many places, but even so, every lead-acid car battery contains sulfuric acid that can be concentrated and used.

I know I am from the EU and Here sulfuric acid is only available up to 14,99%. Everything from 15% on is restricted but the 14,9% stuff is sold in pretty much any hardware store as "PH minus" for swimming pools and pretty cheap, too. A 20l container can be bought for like 50 euro or cheaper. The sulfuric acid concentration of the electrolyte solution in a brand new lead battery is usually 37% but might rise over time due to evaporation of water. Concentrating sulfuric acid is a very simple task but yet not exactly easy. Up to 65-70% its really a piece of cake but above that 70% threshold the sulfuric acid part of the vapours will really start to increase as well. I distill pretty much all sulfuric acid that I use myself from dilute solutions but once your past 90% it's getting serious even with a fully equipped lab in my opinion. I only go up to the maximum 98,xx% azeotrope with water for small amounts and only use that when a procedure really calls for concentrated sulfuric acid. 90% is still enough for most reactions and used.
